Effective Speaking

Cadets are invited to have fun while developing their skills as orators in preparation for the Effective Speaking Competition. Every year, the squadron nominates one cadet to speak at the zone competition. Winning each subsequent competition can propel the cadet to the national stage!

Every speaker delivers one prepared speech (five to six minutes in length) and one impromptu speech (two to three minutes in length). Prepared speech topics are released in the fall and zone competitions typically occur the weekend after March Break. Some prepared topics from past years include:

  • What is a Canadian?
  • What is the importance of gender equality in today’s youth?
  • Should the voting age be lowered to 16?
  • The importance of education
  • My first flight
  • Cadet’s choice of cadet life, science and technology, aviation, Canadian history or citizenship.

This team meets to edit, refine and practice the prepared speech. Cadets are also given the opportunity to practice impromptu speeches.
